In September of 2021, I released my amazing new membership called The Versatile Musician. In this post, I’ll share a behind the scenes look at The Versatile Musician so you can have a better understanding of it!
What is The Versatile Musician?
The Versatile Musician is an online membership designed to help musicians grow their skills to find more enjoyment as musicians and more to offer professionally as performers and educators.
Brenda Earle Stokes entered the online course creation realm back in 2018 with the release of Piano Skills for Singers and it was a total game changer for so many people. People from all over the world were able to learn needed piano skills at their own pace and for a fraction of the cost of private lessons. Over 400 people from all backgrounds and skill levels found success with this course and reqested more and more offerings.

Through 2019-2021 Brenda released another 6 full online courses, expanding her ability to support singers, pianists and music teachers in many different roles.
Why a membership?
The switch to the membership model means that you can have a more customizable experience. When people sign up, they get access to EVERYTHING – all of the piano courses, rhythm and solfege, jazz and improv plus a whole mountain of other tutorials and resources only available to members.
At this writing, there are over 400 video lessons, 500+ pages of print content and tons of practice guides!
There is a montly member’s meetup via Zoom where Brenda presents custome workshops, answers questions and the members can share what they are working on.
New material is constantly being added based on member requests. In March 2022 for example, Brenda created a Music Theory 101 course, added a module on reading chord symbols, added 3 song tutorials and created a new video on how to create satisfying piano arrangements using triads. This was 100% requested content and the members are already devouring it!

Who does it serve?
Our members are from all over the world and many different walks of life. Our membership expands across the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia with the age range from 20-82!
Voice Teachers
As expected, many members are working voice teachers who joined to expand their skills and increase their professional offerings. Many came in to commence or enhance their piano skills, and are also gathering musicianship skills to build their own musicianship. I hear tons of comments from my voice teachers who have started sharing this knowledge with their students. It’s all about attracting new students and retaining their current students with new knowledge and offerings!

Singers and songwriters
We have a nice crew of professional and preprofessional performers who are gathering the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century music industry. Lots of piano skills are being gathered, plus theory and music reading skills.
Rhythm Workout and Crash Course in Solfege are both popular with these folks, as they are often overlooked in traditional vocal performance programs.
Avocational musicians
Avocational music, or music-for-fun-and-growth people are an important population in this membership. Many of these musicians are finding music later in life, or are fulfilling a musical dream that they weren’t able to tackle until now because of a full work and family life. Avocational musicians benefit a lot from The Versatile Musician, becuase they can skip over all the busy-work and get right to learning the skills they really want to learn. It has been a lot of fun to help people identify their musical goals

Avocational musicians
The Versatile Musician offers people a chance to explore and develop their musical skills in a flexible and customizable experience. Many virtual and in-person courses and lessons follow a prescribed plan which may contain unwanted or unneeded material. This can cause a lot of “busy work” that doesn’t actually support someone’s intended musical development.
This membership has a wide range of offerings that complement each other and help to build a complete musical profile: piano skills, musicianship, improvisation and philosophy/productivity. Members can choose their course of study and move through the material with the support of the course creator, Brenda Earle Stokes.
For a low monthly fee, you can the experience of being “in a school” without the stress, expense and hassle. If life gets busy, you can spend less time at it without worrying that you are falling behind. If you get really engaged in the work, you can spend more time and work through more material.
If you need help, you can get it by messaging on the platform with the course creator. You also get to attend the monthly Zoom calls where you interact with the entire membership and the course creator Brenda Earle Stokes.
