Imagine is a song written by John Lennon and featured on the 1971 album Imagine. This is Lennon’s biggest hit post-Beatles and speaks to his personal philosophy of peace and kindness in the world. His wife Yoko Ono inspired the lyrics and ended up receiving a co-writing credit most modem.
The song was co-produced by Phil Spector and recorded in England and New York City.

Step #2: Piano Intro/Hook - VERSE
This song can use our Pop Rock Ballad groove, which shows up in a TON of songs. If you learn this one, you'll sound amazing on all your favorite pop ballads!
Practice tapping the rhythm on your lap and singing along before you put it on the piano.
You can also try the Swaying Pop Ballad accompaniment strategy (shown here using different chords):
Step #3: Chords/Accompaniment - CHORUS
The chorus has more going on, but you can see that the bulk of the work here is getting the chords under your fingers. As I show you in the video, we will play the solid chords first and then break them up into our Swaying Pop Ballad Accompaniment strategy. You are welcome to keep the LH part simpler for measures 5-12 of the chorus, or you can play the octave of the Roots to the 5ths of each chord as written here.
(I outline this strategy in deep detail in my online membership The Versatile Musician.)
Step #4: Put it all together
Remember that you can (and should!) customize this to fit your skill level. If the chord inversions are too challenging for you, then play them all root position. If you want to level it up, try altering the groove or adding some solo fills.
Try to avoid getting stuck in the little details! The goal is for you to learn to sing and play more songs - not drown in a pool of perfectionism. Have fun - it’s only music!
