Wonderwall was a huge hit for the UK band Oasis back in 1995. The jingle jangle guitar sound and melancholy lyrics made it the perfect song for the mid 1990s when grunge was taking over the pop world. This song uses many of the same chords and voicings for the different sections, which makes is very satisfying and easy to play!
In this tutorial, we follow the usual four step protocol for learning to sing and play songs.
Step #1: Learn the chords
Step #2: Learn the accompaniment strategy
Step #3: Learn the ending instrumental section
Step #4: Put it all together.
Let’s go!
Step #1: Learn the chords (see lyrics and chords on the next two pages)
For our first step, you can simply learn the chords in root position. Watch the video and I’ll take you through it.

Step #1: Learn the chords
Wonderwall Verse

Wonderwall Chorus
Notice that there is only one chord different in this section. Everything else you have already played from the verse!
Wonderwall Bridge
Again, notice that most of this material is the same. By noticing the patterns, you make the song much easier to play!
Step #2: Wonderwall Accompaniment Strategy
I call this groove the “Funky” groove. It was extremely popular in the 1990s and dates back to 1960s/70s R&B.
Step #3: Learn the instrumental ending section
At the very end of the song, there is a hook line that goes like this:
Step #4: Put it all together
Remember that you can (and should!) customize this to fit your skill level. If the chord inversions are too challenging for you, then play them all root position. If you want to level it up, try altering the groove or adding some solo fills.
Try to avoid getting stuck in the little details! The goal is for you to learn to sing and play more songs - not drown in a pool of perfectionism. Have fun - it’s only music!
