Because the Night was cowritten by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith. It first appeared on the 1978 Patti Smith album Easter and was a huge hit for her. The lore behind the song is that Springsteen had written and recorded a scratch version of it in 1977 but he wasn’t happy with how it turned out. He felt like it was just going to end up “another love song.” Smith got her hands on it and turned it into her biggest hit single.
Because the night has since been covered by 10,000 Maniacs featuring singer Natalie Merchant, which brought the song another resurgence in 1993.
