VIDEO: 7 Reasons you should improvise at the piano

28

Improvisation brings with it a number of benefits which are really useful for musicians of different genres and even ability levels.  Here are 7 reasons you should improvise at the piano.

Here are 7 reasons you should improvise at the piano every day!

1.  Increasing technical fluidity on the piano

    • Improvisation is a great way to improve your technical ability on the keyboard

2.  Ear training

    • Develop stronger sense of melody and harmony since you’re creating in the moment and you have to tune in a little deeper to what you’re playing

3.  Pulse and rhythm

    • Improvisation is a great way to develop a deeper sense of pulse and a way to explore and execute rhythm in a lot of different capacities

4.  Hand independence

    • Improvisation allows us to explore the coordination and independence of the 2 hands – this is super helpful for anyone who struggles with the relationship between the 2 hands.  Watch this video for a great practice routine!

5.  Exploring your creative mind

    • A great many of us nowadays lack opportunities to use our cretalive mind in an open ended way – even those of us that make music for a living feel like we get stuck in a rut of practicing the “right notes” and we spend little time exploring our creative spirit

6.  Songwriting and composition

    • Some of my best songs have grown out of Improvisation – it gets the creative juices flowing and allows you to explore harmony and melody in a way that can wake up ur inspiration

7.  Meditation and joy

    • Improvisation at the piano is a great way to meditate and find some joy in music – when I get lost in an Improvisation of music, I find it very restorative of my mind and spirit, it’s a great way to cleanse my mind and spirit and solve other problems in my work
