"Still the Same" is a classic song by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.  From the 1978 album Stranger in Town. It hit #4 on the U.S.Billboard Hot 100 song and went on to be an instant classic.

This is one of those rock songs with a piano part that really speaks for itself.  So satisfying to play and surprisingly not that difficult!

The lyrics describe a gamble who the singer admired but who has to walk away from him because he won’t change.  I always thought this was about a woman, but it’s actually about a gambler!

For this Still the Same piano tutorial, I take you through our usual four step protocol for learning to sing and play songs.

Step #1:  Learn the hook

Step #2:  Learn the chords

Step #3:  Learn the accompaniment strategy

Step #4:  Put it all together.

Step #3: Still the Same Accompaniment Strategy

This accompaniment strategy is really simple to play and uses the Charleston Rhythm., which shows up all over the place in pop and jazz music.  Start playing Still the Same this way and experiment with your own rhythms!

Step #4: Put it All Together - Sing and Play Still the Same

Remember that you can (and should!) customize this to fit your skill level.  If the chord inversions are too challenging for you, then play them all root positiong.  If you want to level it up, try altering the groove or adding some solo fills.

Try to avoid getting stuck in the little details!  The goal is for you to learn to sing and play more songs - not drown in a pool of perfectionism.  Have fun - it’s only music!
