Love Me Tender is the classic romantic ballad recorded by Elvis Presley in 1956.  The lyrics are credited to “Vera Matson, but in actuality it was her husband Ken Darby that wrote them.  The melody is also not original - it is based on the Civil War Ballad Aura Lea and written by English writer George R. Poulton.  This was a major hit song for Elvis and remains a sentimental favorite.

Love Me Tender is written in the Key of D and hits quite a few of the chords in that key center.  The accompaniment strategy is very simple, this arrangement sounds exactly like Elvis plays.

Love Me Tender Chords

These are the chord inversions that I teach in this tutorial.  They sound very similar to what Elvis plays on guitar.  You are always welcome to choose your own inversions or even play in root position!!

Love Me Tender Accompaniment Strategy

As with all of my piano arrangements, my goal is to sound as close to the original recording as possible.  We are going to build this strategy in three steps.

Simple "Oom-Pah" accompaniment

The "Oom-Pah" is a versatile accompaniment that works for a ton of styles, from country to Music Theatre.  In its simplest form you alternate between the Left Hand playing the Root and the Right Hand playing the Chord.  Back and forth, back and forth.

"Oom-Pah" Level Up

To level up our "Oom-Pah", the Left Hand is going to alternate between the Root and 5th of each chord.  If the chord changes in the middle of the bar, you will stick to just Roots.

Love Me Tender Accompaniment Final Step

For the final step, you are going to strum each chord in the Right Hand from bottom to top.  This is going to sound just like what Elvis played on guitar!
