Step #2: Learn the piano voicings of Girl From Ipanema
Here are the piano voicings I use in the tutorial. Bear in mind that the main voicing strategy I am using is to play the Root in the LH and 3-5-7-9 in the RH. There are a few exceptions, but mostly I use this strategy.
Step #3: Accompaniment Strategy for Girl From Ipanema
Since this song is a Bossa Nova, we are using that same accompaniment strategy. Play it between the hands until you get a sense of the rhythm. (One of my students likes to call it “Pass the Pepper”)
Step #4: Put it all together
Remember that you can (and should!) customize this to fit your skill level. If the chord inversions are too challenging for you, then play them all root position. If you want to level it up, try altering the groove or adding some solo fills.
Try to avoid getting stuck in the little details! The goal is for you to learn to sing and play more songs - not drown in a pool of perfectionism. Have fun - it’s only music!
