Sus Chords turn up all over the place in piano music and yet many people have no idea what they are. In this post and 5 minute video, you will learn how to play slash chords on piano. Nothing to be confused by!
What are Slash Chords?
Whenever you see a chord symbol that shows a letter followed by a slash, followed by another letter that is a slash chord.
For example:
C/E
Fm/Eb
Gb/Ab
On the left hand side of the slash is the CHORD NAME. To the right of the slash is the bass note.
For example:
C/E means a C chord in the RH with an E in the bass
Fm/Eb means an F minor chord with an Eb in the bass
Gb/Ab means a Gb chord with an Ab in the bass
Why do slash chords exist?
Putting a different note in the bass other than the root changes the quality of the chord. It can also allow for different bass movements, which add a great character to a song.
F C/E Dm C/E
Sometimes slash chords are used to indicate piano voicings. G/A is a way to voice an A7sus chord.
